Gastroenterology Brilliant images

Zdenek Maratka: Differential diagnosis in Digestive Endoscopy. Charles University in Prague, The Carolinum Press, Normed Verlag , Bad Homburg, 2003, 108 p., 221 Colour Pictures, Paperback, 30 €

Zdenek Maratka, the patron of Czech Gastroenterology, recently presented his novel book on differential diagnosis in gastrointestinal endoscopy. This book impresses by a huge selection of brilliant endoscopic images, taken out of the apparently never ending archive of the NORMED Verlag medical publishers.

The most common gastroenterologic diseases, where endoscopic findings are essential for diagnosis, are presented in four chapters: gastro esophageal reflux disease, the gastric and duodenal ulcers, the chronic inflammatory bowel diseases as well as the tumors of the gastrointestinal tract.

The book contains more than 220 images with short and concise text information at a surprisingly reasonable price.

Endoscopists worldwide will be pleased to accept and to incorporate this book with its outstanding high-quality images in their clinical work to improve their daily diagnostic decision making. Wolfgang Rösch

Mařatka Z.: Differential Diagnosis in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Karolinum Praha and Normed Verlag Bad Homburg, 2003.

Not vanishing activity of Professor Mařatka brought a new surprise – another outstanding book publication. In the publishing house Karolinum which proved to be so successful in publishing the comprehensive and representative Mařatka´s Gastroenterology a slim book of 107 pages dealing with the differential diagnosis in gastrointestinal endoscopy has appeared in cooperation with Normed Verlag. Let us not be misled by the seemingly small volume of the pu blication, it is abundantly filled with facts.

The entire contents are based on Mařatka´s endoscopic terminology – an unusually successful text amply tested by numerous international editions. This book, however, is not a simple coloured illustration of endosocpic terminology. It is a well thought-out and logicallly formulated endoscopic differential diagnosis suitable for the needs of the praxis. It is a unique work in the world literature differing from the usual endoscopic atlases by its original concept

This didactic book is essential for the students of endoscopy but also useful for experienced endoscopists. The students will find in the text and accompanying pictures basic information and typical appearances of the findings. The experienced ones will test their knowledge on the clear and logically fomulated descriptions of the findings indicating what aspects are to be observed and evaluated in order to issue a correct endoscopic record.

Th introduction which is a clue to the work deals with the classification of endoscopic findings and definitions of the terms. The following chapters are arranged according to the fundamental morphological features. The contents are assembled in four main chapters devoted to gastro-esophageal reflux disease, gastro-duodenal ulcer, inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal tumors. However, in these chapters practically the entire essential pathology of the gastrointestinal tract is containted. Everything is documented with excellent and instructive colored photos of endoscopic findings. The authors of the pictures are prominent endoscopists : Armengol Miró, Bureš, Cosentino, Fujino, Jaramillo, Leicester, Phillip, Rejchert, W. Roesch, Slezak, Vakil, Zavoral. The number of 119 colored photos on 107 pages point to a substantial concentration of the pictures.

Noteworthy is the fact that the work was written by the author in English and the text with the legends is an instructive treatise of English endoscopic terminology. Both the publishing house Karolinum and the author are to be congratulaed for publishing this outstanding work. Václav Jirásek
